The Bhagavad Gita is one of the holiest books of Hinduism. It is a dialogue between Lord Krishna and Arjuna, in the middle of the great war between the Pandavas and Kauravas as documented in the epic Mahabharatam. In it, Arjuna is overcome with grief that in order to fight in the war, he will have to kill his cousins (the Kauravas). Therefore, he throws down his weapons and refuses to fight.

In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna convinces Arjuna to take up his weapons once again and fight. In the process, he describes the concepts of dharma and karma that are central to the Hindu faith.
